Aforia Jennifer is the founder of Dzordzoe Skin Care, a Ghanaian sustainable beauty brand creating natural, authentic skincare products for all.
She started the brand in 2020, shortly after graduating from university, during a period of high unemployment in Ghana. Struggling to find work, she turned to entrepreneurship and was inspired by the gap she saw in the skincare market. Many products contained synthetic or harsh ingredients, while Ghana had abundant natural resources like shea butter—though its strong scent limited its wider appeal.
Jennifer began experimenting by blending shea butter with essential oils and other natural ingredients such as coconut and olive oil. Her goal was to create products that were both effective and more pleasant to use, while remaining free from chemicals and parabens.
To grow her business, she participated in an AfCFTA capacity-building program, which helped her prepare for cross-border trade. However, she quickly encountered challenges such as price competition from multinational brands, regulatory requirements, and limited standardisation across markets. She also faced logistical barriers, including high shipping costs and customs complexities across African countries.
In response, Jennifer focused on education and collaboration. She shares the story and benefits behind her products to help customers understand their value in a growing “clean beauty” movement. She also works with other SMEs to consolidate shipments and reduce logistics costs, and partners with services like Ghana Post and DHL to improve accessibility.
For Jennifer, collaboration is key: she sees competitors as potential partners and believes shared infrastructure can strengthen African businesses. Her vision extends beyond Ghana, with distribution already reaching markets such as Nairobi. She advocates for regional trade hubs across Africa to make it easier for small businesses to scale across borders.
Looking ahead, Jennifer aims to expand Dzordzoe Skin Care across African regional blocs, building stronger trade connections between countries and making sustainable African products more accessible globally. At the heart of her approach is consistency, clear market focus, and a commitment to serving environmentally conscious consumers through sustainable beauty.
